National Service Dog Month, an annual fundraising and awareness campaign held each September, is the perfect time to reflect on the roles service animals play in peoples lives. Service dogs play many roles, including offering medical assistance, helping law enforcement, and offering emotional support to residents in hospitals and nursing homes.

Under Title II and Title III of the ADA, a service animal means any dog that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a disability, including a physical, sensory, psychiatric, intellectual, or other mental disability. Emotional support or comfort animals do not receive specialized training and may not be able to enter all buildings like service dogs. This is an important distinction to point out to keep consumers informed.
